Clinical Significance of Lidocaine in Treating Pain

Despite the fact that medical science has discovered a lot about the nature of chronic pain, its management remains a challenge for both patients and clinicians.

Lidocaine, in this regard, has long been used for its efficacy to treat chronic pain. It is a medium anesthesia that is well-recognizes not only as an effective medication for neuropathic pain, but also for managing chronic and acute pain. A study found clinical significance of lidocaine in the treatment of the following painful conditions.

Central Pain

Both central and visceral pain can be significantly reduced with the infusion of intravenous lidocaine.

Headache

Lidocaine is not the first-line medication choice to treat severe migraines; however, it can be made a part of therapeutic regimen to alleviate severe headaches. A study found that calcium channel blockade along with Lidocaine can be very effective for chronic headaches.

 Post-Stroke Pain Syndrome (PSPS)

It includes in one of the most refractory pain conditions that many doctors find difficult to treat. A recent study concluded how 10-15 mg Lidocaine dose can decrease PSPS pain within 12 hours. Around 50 percent of patients took Lidocaine for its instant pain relief effect.

Neuropathic Pain

The results from the damaged central and peripheral nervous system are often characterized by clinical features like hyperesthesia, lancination, and hyperpathia.

Lidocaine combats ectopic discharge that originates from injured peripheral nerve and dorsal ganglion.  Hence, Lidocaine can effectively treat this painful condition.
