Mary Edwards Walker, MD was a surgeon, abolitionist, prisoner of war, prohibitionist and a #badass during the 1800s.
Walker was the first woman to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor- awarded for her work in the Civil War as a surgeon.
She attended Syracuse Medical College as a teenager, graduating with a doctor of medicine degree in 1855.
Dr. Mary Edwards Walker proudly supported the struggle for women’s rights during the mid-nineteenth century. She wore the infamous “bloomer dress” before wearing men’s clothes and was often arrested for impersonating a man.
